Batangas is an accessible province that is a favorite weekend or holiday destination of many city-dwellers. The province is blessed with mountains, beaches, and delicious local cuisine. You’ll also find a number of old churches that date back centuries. These act as time warps to visitors who want to see vestiges of old colonial times.
The St. Francis Xavier Church may not be as old as other churches in the province, but it still reminds one of the Spanish era in this part of the Philippines. In the early 1850s, the townsfolk had a church built and dedicated it to St. Francis Xavier and the Nuestra Senora Virgen de le Escalera. In the mid-1890s, the townspeople in Nasugbu revolted against the Spaniards. The soldiers locked hundreds of children, men, and women inside the church and burnt it down. The locals built a wooden church after the tragedy. Fast forward to the 1990s, the present church replaced the old wooden one.
