CALATAGAN TRAVEL GUIDE

Calatagan’s municipality is a peninsula that sticks out into the Verde Island Passage, a vital part of the Coral Triangle that a 2007 Smithsonian Institute study characterized as the “center of the center” of marine biodiversity in the world. The passage and the islands that surround it are famous for having different kinds of species.

If you’ve been to Calatagan, you may have already noticed it. You really don’t have to go far from the shore to see all sorts of fish, starfish, and crabs. If you go further and into the waters, you’ll find all sorts of underwater flora and fauna, all of which contribute to the area’s vibrant ecosystem.

Despite the many companies scrambling to develop part of its shore, Calatagan seems as if it is rejecting massive development. You can’t compare it to a tourist town, because it isn’t. Despite its easy accessibility and closeness to Manila, it isn’t a usual beach getaway, whether during holidays or weekends. Laiya and Anilao are more popular destinations and have more accommodation options. However, over the years, it has slowly gained recognition and the visitors started to trickle in, beginning with Burot Beach (now closed to the public) and then later Manuel Uy Beach Resort.
